Product Development With Pro Engineer Cad Software

Submitted by: Deidra Tuck

CAD uses computing power and computing software to assist in the design process, from creation to optimization. It helps increase the productivity of designers as they no longer have to rely on paper-based tools and can generate reports that are incredibly useful for all involved in the design process. CAD allows for either two-dimensional or three-dimensional representations of the product to be generated, and some software even allows for projections of how the product will function under a variety of circumstances. One can input a variety of parameters and constraints and use this for the optimization of the size, shape and other elements of the product. The end design is usually stored in an electronic file that can be manipulated by others, and is also used as the instruction template for printing or machining.

CAD is usually not used on its own, and forms part of the digital product development cycle which calls upon many other applications or tools, such as Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM), Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE) and Product Data Management (PDM) systems. CAM software is very often used in conjunction in with CAD software to ensure that the development and design of the product produced in CAD can be accurately manufactured by the CAM-driven manufacturing machinery. This is possible because the specifications given by the CAD software can be accurately used to give instructions to the manufacturing plant. PDM creates the reports and documentation required by the manufacturing process. All of these processes are integrated and assist designers and manufacturers to design and produce the best product that they can.

Pro Engineer is CAD software based on modular-process oriented PLM systems. It is single based and parametric. The product of PTC (Parametric Technology Corporation) has many versions. The initial versions ran up to 17 but consequently the following versions were named Wildfire, the latest of which is Wildfire 5.0. Soon, however, the software wad rebranded as Creo Parametric. In its new name the current version is 1.0. Pro/engineer: perhaps one of the most important innovations with regards to design software. It has become the world’s most used tool by engineers, architects, draftsmen and graphic designers. It is used in many areas, from aerospace design, product development processes, shipbuilding, appliances to medical institutions, just to name a few.

Pro/engineer is a very powerful tool. Companies having the knowhow in using the application leverage its advanced modules in saving costs and time. It is therefore essential in any industry.

The most high profile user of Pro/engineer Cad software is NASA. They apply the software specifically in their Space Radiation Program (SRP), in combination with their custom-designed toolkit called “Fishbowl”. Lockheed Martin, a major contractor for NASA utilizes Pro/engineer, in a specially customized way, in the analysis of radiation in the designing of a spacecraft.

There are two functions inside the Pro/engineer application that are the favorite toys of designers in computer technology hardware. The Pro/engineer ISDX (interactive surface design extension) and DSE (Direct surface Edit) are functions in the version Wildfire 4 which can make a last minute change in the design very quickly, saving time of about weeks when using other types of software.

Today, Pro/engineer has been succeeded by Creo Parametric or simply Creo by the same creator PTC. What the company did was merge the functionalities of the three divisions CoCreate, Pro/engineer and Product View that results in a hybrid next generation product that delivers a four cornerstone technologies.
